Friday July 4, 2008

This is the first opportunity for our community to take precepts. Precepts are 8 vows for one day only. This is traditionally done on new and full moon days and was a practice given to lay practitioners so that they could generate tremendous positive action. They also include observing a partial fast, eating one meal only at lunchtime and drinking only before and after. It is best the first time these vows are taken that this happens with a great teacher such as Geshe Soepa. After that, they can be taken at home twice each month.

Start: 7:00 pm
End: 9:00 pm

Tonight we’re viewing the ward-winning film, Kundun, by famed director Martin Scorsese. The destiny of a people lies in the heart of a boy...the moving and beautiful story of the Dalai Lama’s life as a child to his exile in India.

Tonight we’re viewing Zen Noir directed by Marc Rosenbush. Zen Noir is not so much a film about Zen as it is a wacked-out Zen riddle or koan.  It is enigmatic, absurdly funny, and less concerned with the plot's conceits than with the intuitive truth beating within.
